It might seem glamorous to be a professional cheerleader, but there’s more to the job than meets the eye.

PREPARING YOURSELF

Most dancers begin taking dance instruction at a very early age, sometimes even as young as three or four years old. Training is pretty basic during childhood and becomes more intense during the preteen years. For more classical studies like ballet, intense instruction at a professional dance studio is a necessity, especially if the ballerina wants to go on to perform at big-name companies later on. But students can also obtain a significant amount of dance training by taking dance in high school. Dance classes are part of the art and physical education programs. Also, there are groups such as drill team and cheerleading that are made up of dancers, too. Summer dance camps, which include specialized instruction and competitions, are another way that dancers can obtain dance training during their teenage years. After high school, some dancers go on to major in dance in college, but that is not required in order to pursue a career in dance.

Dancers can also make a living by becoming either a teacher or a choreographer, or a combination of the two. Often professional dancers become teachers when they stop dancing full time.
